NETWORKING WITH OTHER FIREFIGHTERS
Networking with other firefighters and departments can help you get a better understanding of what the department is like. This gives you an opportunity to ask questions such as:
- Do they plan on hiring in the future?
- How many firefighters do they plan on hiring in the next 1-3 years?
- When the next exam might be given?
- What does their exam typically consist of and who is the test consultant?
- What does their oral exam consist of?
- What is their physical agility exam like?
Sometimes getting a firefighting job is not always due to luck and hard work; many times, it’s who you know. If they feel you are a good fit for their department, they would be willing to recommend you in the hiring process.
Check to see if the department you are interested in does station visits or ride-alongs. Please review our station visit/ride-along blog to help you present the best impression to the fire department.
Good luck in your pursuit of the greatest job on the face of the earth! Remember – luck goes to the prepared!
